The Second Bank of Carrollton needs a system that enables its bank tellers and authorized bank personnel to open an account (such as a checking or savings account), close an account, deposit funds into the account, and withdraw funds from the account. The account products currently available to customers are listed in Table 10.2.

A new or existing customer can open an account. If the customer is a new customer with no previous accounts and has the minimum required balance, he is free to apply for an account. The bank teller must be able to capture the customer's demographic information, such as full name, address, birth date, Social Security number, home and business phone numbers, amount of initial deposit, and desired bank product(s). When this information is captured, the bank teller submits it for electronic approval (business rule validation) by the application. During this process, the application connects to the checking account history system (CAHS) to obtain information relevant to the customer. The application also checks for existing accounts, type of transaction (cash or check) as entered by the bank teller, and type of new account. When approved, the application notifies the bank teller that the account is open (active).

If, during the electronic approval process, the application finds that the customer has an existing, active account, the application notifies the bank teller, reminding her to notify the customer that the new account will be part of the family of accounts under the customer's Social Security number. The account is then opened.

If the customer has an existing account that is inactive, the bank teller is notified. The application cancels the transaction.

If the customer is new but doesn't have the minimum required balance as entered by the bank teller, the application notifies the bank teller, and the transaction is canceled.
